Which first aid course does my workplace need?
It follows from your first aid needs assessment. Emergency First Aid at Work is one day and covers the emergencies a first aider is most likely to meet, which is enough for most lower risk workplaces. First Aid at Work is three days and goes considerably further, which is what higher risk sites and larger teams usually need. Anyone responsible for children needs Emergency Paediatric First Aid instead. If you are weighing up the first two, we have written a fuller comparison.
How long does a first aid certificate last?
Three years. HSE also recommends a short refresher in each of the two years in between, because practical skills fade a long time before the certificate does. When the three years are up, a First Aid at Work certificate can be renewed with the two day requalification rather than the full course, provided it has not already expired.
How many first aiders do we need?
There is no fixed number in law. It comes out of your needs assessment: how risky the work is, how many people are on site, how the shifts fall and how spread out the building is. We go through it properly in this article.
